Join the excitement at Heroes & Dragons and take to the water in an unforgettable Dragon Boat Race at The Quay and Lake, Lakeside Shopping Centre.

We’re looking for teams of 11 people (10 rowers and 1 drummer) to compete in this fun-filled community event. Whether you’re entering with colleagues, friends or family, it’s a fantastic opportunity to work together, enjoy a great day out and support a local charity.

All profits from the event will go to Thurrock Young Carers, Lakeside’s Charity Partner of the Year.

Every paddle helps Thurrock Young Carers provide vital support, respite activities, mentoring and opportunities for young carers to simply enjoy being young.

FAQ’s

What’s the plan for the day?

The event is designed to fit into a 5 – 6 hour event

09:00 – Team registration

10:00 – Event start, with a welcome and brief overview of the day, followed by a call-up for the first teams.

10:33 – Heat 1 race due to run. Heat 2 Heat 3

15:30 – 16:00 GRAND FINAL (the actual Grand Final time depending on the number of teams racing)

Around 10 mins after the Grand Final finishes, presentations, speeches, & photos, with the Event End once all speeches and presentations have been completed.

I’ve never done this before, will I be shown what to do?

After the introduction and welcome, the first teams will be called up for their safety briefing, where buoyancy aids and paddles are distributed and key safety points and initial landside training will be given. Water safety and potential medical issues are also identified.

  • How to correctly hold the paddle
  • How to start the boat (and basic training on best paddle technique)
  • How to stop the boat
  • How to stop the boat capsizing …
  • The ‘buddy buddy’ system and what to do in the event of a capsize.
  • Identifying weak swimmers? Non swimmers? Anyone with a medical disability?

The dragon boat races are run over a distance of 200 metres, requiring the paddlers and drummer in each team to all work together. Personal fitness over this distance is not important as team work, paddle timing and a determination to be the best team.

Can I brand the boat?

There is also the opportunity to brand up your boat!

I don’t have enough people for a team from our company?

We’re happy for you to form a team with colleagues, friends or family. As long as you have a team of 11 you can race.

Can I raise money for my own charity?

Yes, we’re happy for you to raise money for your own charities. The profit from the tickets will go towards our Charity of The Year Thurrock Young Carers however, you’re welcome to raise money for your charity and fundraise on the day.
