The Story of "The Nutcracker"

Published 24 November 2021

Every year (earlier and earlier) your favourite stores line their windows with Christmas decorations to get you into the festive spirit. Twinkly lights, fluffy fake snow, cheeky elves and of course...Nutcrackers.

This year, we invite you to gather your family and friends and visit our grotto: "Lakeside's Nutcracker Village" located in The Central Atrium. Find out more and book your tickets here

But all this talk of nutcrackers got us thinking...why do we bring them out at Christmas? Where did it all begin? So we did a little "Googling" to find out...

  • They originated in the late 17th century in Germany
  • They were often given as gifts and at some point became associated with Christmas (this is kind of the main reason we were looking into this but funnily enough, we couldn't actually find any information on why they come out at Christmas)
  • In Germany, they were given as gifts / keep sakes and were thought to protect the home
  • Production on a mass scale began after the 19th century
  • The figurines became even more popular in the 20th century after Tchaikovsky's famous ballet "The Nutcracker" in which the soldier like dolls featured.
  • Despite their name, you can't actually use them to crack nuts.

There are a variety of nutcracker bits and bobs available right here in the centre and can be found in stores like:

- Primark

- Claire's

- Yankee Candle

- M&S

- Flying Tiger

- Typo

- House of Fraser

- Next

- Wilko

- Poundland

Don't forget, we also have our Golden Nutcracker Drum located next to the grotto where you can donate any spare cash you can to our charity partner, The Karis May Darling Foundation.
