Meet The Super Sunscreens

SPF that performs like skincare

There has been a recent shift away from complicated, Korean-inspired 12 step skincare routine in favour of something a little more streamlined. Thankfully. This has had a significant impact on product formulation too – as now every step has to work as hard as possible. And often has to deliver multiple skin benefits to guarantee its place on your bathroom shelf. So it was only a matter of time before our most important (and often overlooked) skincare step levelled up.

No longer just delivering sun protection, 2024 is the year of the super-charged sunscreen. High performance formulas that don’t just shield the skin from sun damage, but are enhanced with active ingredients to boost protection, tackle premature ageing and boost radiance. Meet your new favourite skincare step.

First up, The INKY List’s Polyglutamic Acid Dewy Sunscreen SPF 30 (available at Next Lakeside). As well as offering broad spectrum protection (that means it protects against both UVA and UVB rays), this formula also contains three ultra-hydrating ingredients – Polyglutamic Acid, Glycerin and Squalane – to double up as a moisturiser too. The result is soft, dewy skin that make-up sits perfectly on top of. Colette Laxton, the brand’s co-founder explains, ”For me, creating an SPF people WANT to wear was critical. My love for our Polyglutamic Acid Serum and the transformative effect it has on my skin (with or without make up), made it a no-brainer to be a game changing lead ingredient in our SPF. It’s dewy perfection!”

Other entries of note? Sensitive skincare pioneers Pai last week launched British Summer Time Glow SPF 30 (also available at Next) – a mineral sunscreen that doesn’t cause irritation but does deliver instant glow. It combines two of the brand’s bestselling formulas – the original British Summer Time sunscreen and its hydrating bronzing drops, The Impossible Glow. So now you don’t have to choose between sun safety and boasting that just-back-from-holiday radiance.

If you’ve ever experienced dark spots or pigmentation, you’ll know the struggle to clear it and prevent further damage is real. That’s why we’re just a little bit obsessed with Eucerin’s Sun Pigment Control SPF50+ (available at Boots Lakeside). A broad spectrum sunscreen – it offers very high UV protection to prevent sun-induced hyperpigmentation. And is enhanced with Glycyrrhetinic Acid to help repair existing damage – as well as Thiamidol to visibly reduce dark spots and prevent their reappearance. If hyperpigmentation is your skin concern, you’ll also love Murad’s Correct & Protect Broad Spectrum SPF 45, £69 (available at M&S Lakeside). Combining their serum and sunscreen formulas into one – it is clinically proven to show an improvement in brightness by 80% of participants in 2 weeks and 84% in four weeks.

Don’t forget, you can shop these – plus many more high performance sunscreens here at Lakeside this summer. You’ll find an edit of our favourites below.
