Lakeside announces new charity partnership with the Karis May Darling Foundation

Published 1 June 2021

About The Karis May Darling Foundation

The Karis May Darling Foundation aims to help underprivileged children to achieve their aspirations through performing arts and sport, while also raising awareness of the benefits of organ donation.

The 18-month partnership will enable Lakeside shopping centre to fundraise for the charity, and promote it to its millions of visitors, significantly raising its profile. The centre will also provide advice and raffle prizes over the course of the partnership, while its employees – who selected the charity for the partnership – will give up their time to volunteer when opportunities arise.

Howard Oldstein, centre director at Lakeside, said: “It is a privilege to announce that we will be supporting the Karis May Darling Foundation until the end of 2022. This is a brilliant charity which provides opportunities and equipment for local youths. We cannot wait to begin fundraising and awareness raising, and we hope to do the charity proud.”

The Karis May Darling Foundation was set up in 2011 by the family and friends of 12-year old Karis, who died when she contracted streptococcal A and subsequently developed meningitis. Her family decided to donate her organs, saving five people’s lives in the process.

In 2014 the Karis May Darling Foundation opened a community centre which has a diner, coffee shop, multi-purpose hall, sound-proofed music room and football pitch. It hosts a plethora of community clubs and sessions each week including a performing arts school and a subsidised preschool.

John Darling, Chairman, from the Karis May Darling Foundation, said: “We are so very grateful to Lakeside for selecting us for this charity partnership. It will do an incredible amount of good for a wonderful cause and will help so many families locally. Thank you, Lakeside. We are looking forward to seeing what the next 18 months will bring.”
